large and outstanding model of Eagle Point,
minutely rendered with all the details of deck fittings, etc. with a label stating: ‘Screw Steamer EAGLE POINT, the Norfolk & North American Steam Shipping Co Ltd, with all technical details. Builders Joseph L Thompson & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, year built 1900’.

Provenance: Footnote:
Eagle Point set out from St. John’s Brunswick for Le Havre with a cargo of hay and oats for the Front but was torpedoed by submarine U-70 on March 28th 1916 and sank 100 miles WSW of Bishop’s Rock with no loss of life.
The famous shipbuilding company of Joseph Thompson and Sons dates back to 1846. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and for many years was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. During the Second World War their prototype proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945.
