A Gilt Clock by Robert Robin

The large circular dial of this late 18th Century clock has the minutes marked in Arabic numerals and the hours in Roman numerals. The case is composed of two bold acanthus leaf scrolls surmounted by a charming group of Cupid (Love) and Spaniel (Devotion) in the clouds. All set on a white carrara marble plinth with ormolu mounts. The movement is a square plate French 8 day movement stamped 'Etienne Mayant, Paris, Brevette'. Signed on the dial Robin H(orlo)ger du Roy A PARIS. Circa 1790.

Footnote
Robert Robin 1742-1799 was educated in Faubourg Saint-Honore and attained the rank of Master clockmaker by 1767. He worked for various patrons including Louis XV, Louis XVI, the Duke of Chartres, the Count d'Artois and the painter Vernet. In 1786 Marie-Antoinette commissioned him to supply timepieces for the Petit Trianon at Versailles and by the time of his death, he deservedly styled himself 'Principal fournisseur de la Cour de France'.
